The next day, a van comes and picks us up we drive until San Juan de Chamula and stop at the entrance of the town. We accept and pay, believing that it's better to book a tour through our hotel and believing it's worth the price difference. At the agency, the employee tells us that the horseback riding tour on the leaflet is organised by another agency, and that they can offer something similar with transport included and 5 hours instead of 3 hours (which, according to him, justifies the fact that it costs 1000 pesos instead of 400 pesos as indicated on the other agency's flyer). He makes the call and then tells us to go to the hotel's agency, so that's what we do. They had flyers for horseback riding tours at the reception, so we asked the receptionist to call so that we could book a tour for the next day. Employees barely speak English, both at the reception and at the hotel's agency (next to the reception). ![]() We rarely post negative reviews but thought it was important to do so this time. We decided to spend 3 nights at the Grand Maria Hotel given the positive reviews on TripAdvisor. The restaurant is only open until 12 noon, but there are many cafes and restaurants nearby for other meals. Breakfast was included, there was a choice, and it was always promptly delivered with a smile. Most people were very respectful during my stay. Be aware of sounds travelling across the central atrium if there are noisy guests staying and if you like a quiet hotel. The rainhead shower was seriously fantastic, with amazing pressure. The bathroom was well appointed, with a range of toiletries, clean towels, facecloths and bathmat. The beds were comfortable, but the plastic cover on the mattress and under the sheet, made the bed rather hot and sticky. The twin room I stayed in backed onto the kitchen, but the sounds travelling from there were very few. Between Google Translate from the WiFi in the lobby, we were able to understand each other! The night lady spoke amazing English, and gave great advice on buses which was much appreciated. ![]() Reception did not speak any English, and I spoke very little Spanish. Arrived first thing on an overnight bus from Oaxaca.
